Sessional Staff - University Apprenticeship Mentor – 

Salary: £33.43 - £39.22 ph + holiday pay, (hourly sessional rate)

Please note: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are currently mostly working remotely with limited access to the Ravensbourne building 

The Role

Objective: To ensure apprentices are managing academic workload and able to perform to standard to pass the units and assessment requirements.

The below is an overview of the role and which indicates areas of responsibility.

Student supervision: Act as University apprenticeship mentor providing a first point of contact for all students across the Digital &Technology Solutions programme: (Number of students approximately 60)

  • Pastoral care delivery and sign-posting
  • Academic query sign-posting
  • Site visit to each student in term 1
  • Site or electronic conference visit in term 2
  • Oversight of Reflective Practice requirements in liaison with academic leads working on course delivery
    • Discussing Independent Learning log with student and employer mentor
    • Discussing e-Portfolio with student and employer mentor

Employer Mentor liaison

  • Tripartite meeting with employer mentor and student
    • On site term 1
    • Electronic conference visit in term 2
  • Maintain regular contact and give advice on the DTS programme, student progress and employer mentor responsibilities

The university apprenticeship mentor is the link between the Student, the University and the employer (line manager). They would schedule face to face or remote reviews with the apprentice as a minimum every term and they could agree that the manager either attends the whole review, or the manager could join for the last 15/20 mins to get an overview of what has been discussed with the student so they can support with any forward planning/upcoming activities. These should be agreed and scheduled into the learner’s calendar.  

Typically the review would include

  • Overview of progress/results
  • Study dates/upcoming sessions etc
  • Off the job activities
  • Wellbeing
  • Safeguarding/prevent/British Values discussion
  • Operational feedback – provided by the employer (line manager)
  • Forward planning
  • Opportunity for the student to make any final comments.

The employer coaches attend the programme calls where possible and can give updates to the university mentor on any learners causing concern or celebrating any success.  They would also communicate directly with the employer if they have concerns over student, such as referrals, non-submissions of work, if the learner needs additional support from the employer or concerns over the 20% off the job time etc.   They would also support their general wellbeing, offer advice and guidance on where they can get the necessary help from either the University services or the employer.

The university apprenticeship mentor will also have one to one reviews with the course director on a monthly basis and keep them informed of any issues that need addressing and affect the apprentice’s learning progression.

The Candidate

  • Experience of Mentoring or Coaching at adult level
  • Familiarity of broadcast industry, preferably with industry or HE experience
  • Communication, organisation and project management skills
  • Able to programme and keep records up to date
  • Able to work flexibly according to apprentice timetable
